Delivering Progress: How Malaysia’s Maritime Energy Movers Drive Nation Building

Maritime sector powers Malaysia’s growth through sustainable maritime energy, offshore innovation, and inclusive development.

In Malaysia, the maritime sector is more than the backbone of trade, it is a dynamic force of energy movement, industrial transformation, and inclusive growth. From LNG carriers to offshore gas clusters, energy movers in the maritime domain are charting a bold course toward national prosperity and global relevance.

Maritime Energy Movers: Anchors of the Economy

Malaysia’s maritime sector contributes approximately 40% to the national GDP, with the transportation of energy and offshore development playing pivotal roles.

The country’s strategic location along the Straits of Malacca enables  90% of trade to be transported by sea.

The sector’s strength lies in its  energy logistics infrastructure—from LNG to bunkering vessels and offshore platforms. The  Malaysia Maritime Single Window (MMSW) system, launched in 2024, further streamlines port operations, enhancing transparency and efficiency.

Maritime Pathways to a Low-Carbon Future

Malaysia is advancing the development of  Liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carriers through a landmark joint venture ‘Jules Nautica’ between  PETRONAS CCS Ventures, MISC, and MOL, enabling regional carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions.

This innovation positions Malaysia as a leader in low-carbon shipping, aligning with global climate goals while expanding maritime capabilities. This milestone signals our nation’s readiness to support regional CCS projects across Asia Pacific.

In the shipbuilding arena, MISC has continued to make the nation proud through several strategic partnerships that are driving progress in sustainable maritime solutions. Here’s to name a few milestones;

AET, MISC’s petroleum business, will be developing two of the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel Aframaxes, marking a key step in making ammonia a viable maritime fuel. This milestone supports MISC’s broader sustainability goals under its 2030 aspirations.

In 2023, AET marked a significant milestone with the delivery and naming of the Malaysian flagged Eagle Vellore, the first in a series of three LNG dual-fuel VLCCs. Named in Pasir Gudang, Johor—Eagle Vellore stands as our focused commitment to sustainable and responsible shipping.

MISC has pledged to achieve Net-Zero GHG emissions by 2050, with an interim target of 50% reduction in shipping operations’ GHG intensity by 2030, benchmarked against 2008 levels.

This aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which aim for a 45% reduction in GHG intensity by 2030.

Decarbonisation Pathways

To meet these goals, MISC is implementing a multi-pronged strategy:

  • Fleet Renewal: Investing in high-efficiency dual-fuel vessels and zero-emission ships.
  • Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS): Exploring CCS technologies for onboard applications.
  • Methane Slip Reduction: Deploying advanced technology to minimise methane emissions from LNG carriers.
  • Operational Efficiency: Enhancing ship performance through AI, IoT, and predictive maintenance.

These efforts are supported by internal carbon pricing mechanisms that integrate carbon costs into investment and CAPEX decisions.

At Energy Asia 2025, Zahid Osman, President & Group CEO of MISC, moderated a panel on Reindustrialising Malaysia, emphasising the urgency of a just energy transition and the maritime sector’s role in enabling it.

ESG Performance & Governance

MISC has already achieved a 32% reduction in GHG intensity for shipping operations from its 2008 baseline. Governance frameworks have been strengthened to ensure resilience and regulatory readiness, including quarterly ESG reviews and integration of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) into decision-making.

Public Recognition

MISC’s unwavering commitment to sustainability, governance, and innovation has earned it widespread recognition. MISC’s Heart of the Ocean programme which acknowledges MISC’s commitment to ocean health and biodiversity, including initiatives like coral reef conservation and sea turtle protection, earned Silver Awards at The Star ESG Awards in both 2022 and 2023 for its impactful marine biodiversity conservation efforts.

In 2024, the company clinched the Silver Award at The Edge ESG Awards, marking its third consecutive win in the Transport & Logistics Sector for exemplary ESG performance.

At the National Corporate Governance & Sustainability Awards (NCGSA), MISC was honoured with the Industry Excellence Award in Transportation & Logistics and ranked among Malaysia’s Top 25 companies for overall excellence.

AET,  also made headlines by jointly winning Tanker Operator of the Year at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Awards and securing the Islamic Finance Deal of the Year for its USD100 million sustainability-linked revolving credit facility. AET further cemented its leadership with two wins at The Asset’s Triple A Islamic Finance Awards for Best Sustainability-Linked Financing, reinforcing MISC’s role as a trailblazer in responsible maritime and energy logistics.

Offshore Energy Movers: MISC’s Role in Powering Malaysia’s Future

As Malaysia’s flagship maritime energy company, MISC plays a central role in offshore energy development, logistics, and innovation. With a diversified portfolio spanning floating production systems, LNG and ethane carriers, and carbon transport infrastructure, MISC is shaping the future of offshore energy.

Floating Production Systems (FPSs)

MISC is a reputable FPSO and FSO owner-operator, with 12 active assets deployed across strategic regions, including Malaysia, Brazil, and Vietnam.

Another proud milestone in this space is FPSO Kikeh converted at MHB in Pasir Gudang, Johor. As Malaysia’s and Asia’s first deepwater FPSO, it is located approximately 120 km northwest of Labuan, Sabah, in Block K, operating in water depths of 1,300–1,350 meters.

At the time of its development, FPSO Kikeh featured the largest external turret ever built and, together with its truss spar, stood as the largest structure of its kind constructed in Malaysia.

From pioneering Malaysia’s first deepwater FPSO to embarking on the conversion of a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) into a Mobile Water Injection Facility (WIF), MHB continues to engineer solutions that power the nation forward.

Global Energy Logistics

MISC operates a modern fleet of over 100 vessels, including LNG, petroleum, and ethane carriers, with a presence in 11 countries across 6 continents.

This expansive reach allows MISC to deliver energy reliably and sustainably, while also supporting Malaysia’s ambition to be a global energy hub.

Inclusive Growth: Empowering Communities and Women

Leading from the front in moving energy, we are also reshaping the social fabric of maritime work:

MISC’s rollout of female-specific PPE for seafarers reflects a commitment to gender inclusivity and safety.

Events like International Day for Women in Maritime and Malaysia Maritime Week 2025 spotlight leadership and legacy, encouraging broader participation in maritime careers.

These efforts open doors for lower-income communities and women, offering pathways into high-impact roles in energy logistics, vessel operations, and sustainability leadership.

CMISC as a Catalyst for National Progress

From offshore gas fields to carbon-neutral carriers, MISC and its group of companies are not just moving energy; they are fuelling transformation. Their contributions to GDP, job creation, and climate resilience make them indispensable to Malaysia’s journey toward a sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive maritime future.
