Why Isn’t Maritime on the Radar for Women?

Despite the vast and vital role the maritime industry plays in our global economy, it remains one of the most male-dominated fields in the world. Today, women make up less than 2% of the global seafaring workforce. Why is that?

For many women, maritime simply isn’t on their radar. Cultural stereotypes paint life at sea as rough, risky, and reserved for men. Images of grizzled sea captains and burly deckhands persist in the public imagination, sidelining the remarkable women who already thrive in these roles. It’s time to chart a new course, one where women are seen, heard, and celebrated in maritime.

The Myths We’ve Inherited

Myth 1: “The sea is no place for women.”

Reality check: Women are already, literally at the helm. From captains commanding vessels across oceans to marine engineers keeping the heart of ships running, women are proving every day that the sea is for those with the skill, resilience, and drive and not just a specific gender.

Myth 2: “Maritime careers aren’t safe or sustainable for women.”

Modern vessels are designed with safety, technology, and inclusivity in mind. The industry has made strides with policies that ensure respectful workplaces, safer environments, and better connectivity at sea. Today’s ships are not just workspaces but they're living environments evolving to support a diverse crew.

Myth 3: “There’s no career growth for women in this field.”

The career path in maritime is dynamic. Many women start as cadets and rise to senior ranks both onboard and ashore. From captains to fleet managers, from ship to shore-based leadership, the ladder is there and women are climbing it.

Why Maritime, and Why Now?

Maritime careers are no longer just about life at sea, they’re about powering global trade, accelerating energy transition, and innovating towards sustainability. With digitalisation and decarbonisation shaping the future, diverse perspectives are not only welcome but they’re essential.

For women aspiring to lead change, the ocean is wide open. Opportunities exist from cadetships to C-suite roles across sea and ashore.
